Networks, Nodes and Knowledge

from Virtual to Real

Wed 13 Oct 2010 from 5:30-9 pm at the Hotel du Vin Birmingham

Science Capital is offering this Hello Digital festival event to explore the latest digital media technologies and virtual reality innovations being developed in the region, and build new connections between academic groups, business experts and investors.

Entrepreneurs are invited to present their plans to a panel of experts from Advantage Business Angels, Anthony Collins Solicitors, Beer & Partners, Blueberry Consultants, CSWP, Eversheds,  FD Solutions, Fullrange, ICT Practice,  MedilinkWM, Mercia and Midven.

Join in the discussions with local innovators and leading experts, and hear how the latest developments in the the West Midlands could transform your world.

Speakers include:

Nick Burton, Executive Producer for Communications and Technology at Rare.  The team at Rare has been creating games for the past 25 years and have seen many changes in that time, from simplistic hand drawn "pixel art" graphics to today's ultrahigh fidelity real-time simulations. During this time Rare has remained at the forefront of game development by continual investment in new technology coupled with a strong sense of creativity, exploring how both can come together to create something magical. But where next for games? As Rare readies for the launch of Kinect Sports for Microsoft's new motion sensing system we think about how far this new mode of human computer interface could take us and what opportunites it presents.

David Burden, Managing Director of Daden Limited, a virtual worlds and AI specialist based at Birmingham Science Park, using virtual worlds for education, training and visualisation, and a double prize-winner in year's US Federal Virtual Worlds Challenge.

Jonnie Turpie is the founder of Maverick TV, which has established deep roots in Birmingham and the West Midlands region, and will present on the latest developments in the digital media business.

Lucy Hooberman, director of Digital Media and Innovation at the University of Warwick will give her story, and has a career that spans the BBC and industry.

People will gather at 5:30pm for a reception and to view posters and products.  A set of short talks on this important theme for our region will begin at 6pm, followed by a lively panel discussion. Food and drinks will be served, along with plenty of time for networking. Meetings with business leaders and investors will be arranged.
